How Does Skin Change Over the Years?
Before understanding how skin changes over the years, let’s first learn due to which factors our skin changes.

Genetics: It could be that it’s in your genetics that your skin is naturally prone to faster aging.

Sun Exposure: UV damage is a major root cause of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, faster aging, etc.

Lifestyle Habits: If you are doing something wrong, your body will show you signs through your skin. Some of the biggest skin problem contributors include a poor diet, dehydration, smoking and drinking, stress, and inadequate sleep.
Now that we know what certain controllable factors responsible for skin changing are, let’s discover the natural aging process of the skin.

As you age, your body goes through a lot of changes internally.
First and foremost, the cell metabolism slows down in the epidermis layer, as a result of which, lipid production also decreases. Due to this, the epidermal layer becomes thinner, and the production of hyaluronic acid decreases leading to less retention of water in the skin cells. This leads to the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation, and fine lines. The skin’s natural protection against UV rays also decreases.
Further, changes in the dermis lead to a decrease in collagen production. The skin’s support system thus, weakens. Further thinning of the dermis leads to an even greater decrease in the level of hyaluronic acid production and issues like inflammation become more common.
Due to this weakening of the internal support structure of the skin, it starts to lose elasticity and firmness. Further dark spots become evident on the skin.
These combined effects contribute to the visible signs of aging.
Let’s look at it decade-wise:

20s: This decade is your physical prime. With high collagen production and elasticity, your skin is the healthiest.

30s: Now, the elasticity and collagen production decrease leading to the appearance of wrinkles, dullness, and fine lines.

40s: The skin becomes prone to extreme wrinkling and sagging. The skin also becomes thinner and drier.
How Shall One Evaluate Skin Over the Years?

Periodic Assessments: Visit your trusted dermatologist periodically and get a professional evaluation done to track major changes such as elasticity, pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, etc.

Texture and Tone: Look for changes in your skin that can be visibly seen or felt. Track the amount of pigmentation, dark spots, dullness, etc.

Hydration Levels: Perform an easy and simple pinch test to test your skin for dehydration. Depending on the result, focus on moisturizing according to your skin’s needs.

Monitor Sensitivity: Closely monitor the changes in how your skin reacts to certain products. These changes/reactions are great indications of the internal changes happening in the layers of your skin.
